For immune health’s sake, beware of blanket advice.

June 30th, 2009 admin

How many times am I and others hearing the advice:  “Eliminate gluten from your diet.”  Or: “Get rid of all dairy Don’t ever make me give this up. products.

Beware immune products that claim they can cure, treat or prevent
The flu season will upon us in the next 6 months. It’s a good time to watch out for supplements, herbal remedies or over-the-counter products that claim they can treat, cure or prevent H1N1 flu. The FDA and FTC have been pretty active lately in sending “warning letters” to the parent companies of these products, telling them...
Immune health supplements – a lot of exotic boosting, but where’s the balance?
Immune health supplements – a lot of exotic boosting, but where’s the balance?
I’ve worked in the business side of the nutrition and supplement field for several years, so I try to keep track of what’s happening in the supplement product world as best I can. (I also work with bank portfolio management software and dairy cow nutritional feed ingredients, so sometimes I’m a bit limited in time and bandwidth)....
The gut health/immune health story continues…and it’s weighty.
The gut health/immune health story continues…and it’s weighty.
Newsweek and other media are writing about about gut bacteria (which I’ve blogged about here several times) and how the distribution and composition of specific bacteria in our digestive system may play a significant role in weight gain and obesity. The news is a result of a couple of studies independently published in recent issues of Science...
Immune health piece in the Trib: same old boost, no balance.
Immune health piece in the Trib: same old boost, no balance.
This week Chicago Tribune nutrition writer Julie Deardorf posted a piece on nutrition and immune health .  She laid out a lot of good information, especially regarding so-called immune “boosting” pills/products such as the “Airborne” over-the-counter cold/flu remedy that had to c ough up nearly $30 million in settlement...
Health and Beauty Products
I don’t know about you, but I tend to have a pretty difficult time searching for the best prices and information about health and beauty products on google. There are so many sponsored links and most of the major shopping sites only list stores or brands who have paid for the links! It’s even tougher with organic beauty and health products...
The H1N1 chatter is returning…along with a lot of immune health misinformation
I’m seeing some local news stories this week announcing an oversupply of H1N1 vaccine, available free in most places, and being distributed to anyone and everyone, not just kids and young adults. In Iowa, there some 60,000 doses available right now and more in the supply chain. The Iowa state epidemiologist has stated that nearly 50% of the...
Immune health and the Dark (chocolate) Side
My family recently completed a “30 Sugar-Free Days” campaign, where we all tried to eat fruits, veggies, lean meat, no breads and products with no processed sugar. One of the foods allowed in this regimen was dark chocolate.  Hence, we’ve had dark chocolate bars–72% cacao–in our house regularly over the past month....

Any and all advice about opening a dance studio?
I have always wanted to own my own dance studio. I have 1 year left in college and really feel this is what I want to do. I would love any advice any of you have about where to even begin? Do you think its possible for a upcoming grad to achieve this? I would want to teach ballet jazz tap hip hop modern and possibly aerobics class (open to anything...
Make New Year’s weight-loss resolution one that doesn’t damage immune health
Make New Year’s weight-loss resolution one that doesn’t damage immune health
Forty-six percent of  U.S. adults make New Year’s resolutions, and the most popular one, according to information portal USA.gov , is losing weight. Some people attempt to do it the right way: slowly, steadily, not denying yourself good nutrition, getting exercise, good sleep habits, and staying with it over the long term. Others will do...

Some immune health blogs and media that are worth a look
The immune balance story continues to wend its way through the nutrition-and-health world.  And with the state of things right now–pandemic updates, new research published every hour, piles of junk science and unbelievable claims to muck through, new health conditions to define, etc.,–I thought it would be worth a few minutes to list...
