A conception of our Tabla maestro Nawaz Mirajkar and Piano teacher Renu Suresh, this musical extravaganza will be presented by 30local and guest artistes from India, using vocals, flutes, veenas, sitar, piano, sarangi, sarod, western strings-cello, double bass and violin, the Australian aboriginal digiridu and a plethora of Indian percussion instruments from ancient times to our present day, as well as drums from other cultures - Japanese, Chinese, Middle East and tribal.   India: Running out of Steam (part 5...
  These are excerpts from National Geographic's "The Great Indian Railway"(1995), probably the best documentary ever on the Indian Railways. As a young boy, I used to travel to Grandma's place by the Howrah Mail from Madras. In 1989, on one such trip, My dad pointed out to a gigantic engine puffing smoke in the shed at Madras central as our train was leaving and said: "Manu, look, that's a steam engine". I forgot about steam engines later. In 1999(10 years later), I watched the National Geographic's special screening of this documentary on TV. I remembered my encounter with the puffing beasts in 1989. I couldn't stop crying by the end of this documentary. Starting in the early 80's the Steam engines of the Indian Railways have been slowly phased out of all the main lines in favor of Electric and Diesel locomotives due to economic pressures. By the turn of the 90's, it had become a rare sight to see a Steam-driven train. You can buy the DVD or VHS of this 115 minute documentary on nationalgeographic.com. In terms of Nikas, soundproduction, note the sweetness, clarity and balance of Ustad Faiyaz Khan. Ustad Faiyaz Khan was born in Sikar, Rajastan, into a family of musicians. His father Nazir Khan was a court musician at the court of the Maharaja of Karoli. At a young age Faiyaz Khan was put under the tutelage of the master Ustad Hidayat Khan, who shaped his sound-production and musicality strongly. Faiyaz Khan also had the privilage to learn with the late Ustad Inam Ali Khan, the former Khalifa(head) of the Delhi tradition of Tabla, and in addition to this rich North Indian training, he also took lessons from the South-Indian percussion master Ramnath Ishwaran, who taught him the mathematics of the South. When he joined All India Radio in 1955, he had already completed his first tour abroad. In 1958 he moved to Delhi to be able to accompany all the great masters at the radio station. Faiyaz Khan is one of the rare Tabla players who have had a chance to play and tour the whole world with masters of different eras in the classical Indian Music scene.
