  The leadership of the Theosophical Society, which disseminated the teachings of the 19th century occult movement "Theosophy," had established its Eastern branch in India, but some of the locals did not appreciate the Society's presence nor what they saw as the brazen attempt to link the Theosophical teachings of their secret Masters, or "Mahatmas," to India's Aryan and post-Aryan religious tradition. These Secret Masters were depicted as supermen who directed the world affairs from the underground cities under the Himalayas, as explained in Blavatsky's magnum opus, The Secret Doctrine. The Brahmins largely objected to the Theosophists and considered "The Secret Doctrine," provocative and blasphemous. Yet there were a few Brahmins who were attracted to the teaching of Theosophy, which allowed enough support to build the Theosophical Society headquarters in Adyar. Theosophy concerns itself with the teachings of certain "Mahatmas" who allegedly form a hierarchal organization called "The Great White Lodge," or "Brotherhood." The most important theme in the doctrines by these Mahatmas, claimed by the Theosophists as the 'divine wisdom' of the Gods, is the Spiritual Evolution of Humanity which is accomplished thru the modality of multiple "rounds" or cycles of reincarnation at various points in the planetary system, forming a Great Chain of Being, allocated and adjudicated by the lords of karma who register the actions of humans - all as part of the 'Divine Plan'. A conception of our Tabla maestro Nawaz Mirajkar and Piano teacher Renu Suresh, this musical extravaganza will be presented by 30local and guest artistes from India, using vocals, flutes, veenas, sitar, piano, sarangi, sarod, western strings-cello, double bass and violin, the Australian aboriginal digiridu and a plethora of Indian percussion instruments from ancient times to our present day, as well as drums from other cultures - Japanese, Chinese, Middle East and tribal. Damaru is truly a confluence of different music and serves as a tribute to all the great masters and inventors of various percussions instruments and a celebration of their invaluable contribution to the evolution of drumming. In terms of Nikas, soundproduction, note the sweetness, clarity and balance of Ustad Faiyaz Khan. Ustad Faiyaz Khan was born in Sikar, Rajastan, into a family of musicians. His father Nazir Khan was a court musician at the court of the Maharaja of Karoli. At a young age Faiyaz Khan was put under the tutelage of the master Ustad Hidayat Khan, who shaped his sound-production and musicality strongly. Faiyaz Khan also had the privilage to learn with the late Ustad Inam Ali Khan, the former Khalifa(head) of the Delhi tradition of Tabla, and in addition to this rich North Indian training, he also took lessons from the South-Indian percussion master Ramnath Ishwaran, who taught him the mathematics of the South. When he joined All India Radio in 1955, he had already completed his first tour abroad. In 1958 he moved to Delhi to be able to accompany all the great masters at the radio station. Faiyaz Khan is one of the rare Tabla players who have had a chance to play and tour the whole world with masters of different eras in the classical Indian Music scene.
